Marja Helander / Silence

2014-02-23 to 2014-04-27

In Marja Helanders suggestive photographs and videos the lead role is played by the Northern landscape and the special living conditions it imposes. Snow-bedecked landscapes, horizontal lines of distant mountains and vast expanses of bare terrain. The light's different nuances, the depth of darkness and lonely factory buildings convey a bewitching stillness but also a sense of unease. What is to happen with those industrial landscapes stained by pollution? How do we people fit into this environment?

Marja Helander (born in 1965) lives and works in Helsinki, Finland. The accent of her work is on her own identity in the borderland between Finnish and Sami culture and on the encounter between contemporary and traditional culture. Her work has been exhibited at the following venues, among others: National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, 2013; Northern Photographic Center, Uleåborg (Finland), 2012 and the Photographic Gallery Hippolyte, Helsinki, 2010.

The exhibition is produced by Bildmuseet with funding support from Umeå2014 and Kulturkontakt Nord (Nordic Culture Point).
