Mats Caldeborg / What Do We Need Art For?

Artist Mats Caldeborg lives and works in Järnäsklubb, Sweden, where he and Katrin Zackrisson Caldeborg run the Konsthall Norra Kvarken gallery. Through his artistry as well as in public debate, Caldeborg has highlighted the place of art and poetry in life.

Konsthall Norra Kvarken has developed into a site for artistic and intellectual encounters with people visiting from near and far. The gallery’s current project Art for Birds, Bumblebees, Beetles, Worms and Mushrooms has attracted national attention and discussion. In his contribution to Bildmuseet’s anniversary forum, Caldeborg reflects on the significance of art and the human ability for abstract thinking.

For four decades, Mats Caldeborg has exhibited at a large number of Swedish art galleries and museums. His exhibition at Bildmuseet in 2006 was titled Ensligheter [solitarities], developed in collaboration with author Thomas Tidholm. Caldeborg is represented in the collections of Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Gothenburg Art Museum and at Västerbottens Museum.
